Proper Preparation To Receive A Hunting Falcon
If you have decided to become a hunter, you may be interested in caring for animals that have the ability to help with your hunt. One of the most unique animals that you can have on your team to help you with hunting is a falcon. When you are the owner of a falcon, you must have the appropriate space for keeping as well as training the animal. If you are expecting a falcon to join your hunting team soon, here are some things that you should do to prepare.
Get your falcon a proper fitting hood
All falcons will need to have a hood before they are transported for any length of time. It is important to try the hood on the falcon well in advance of transport so that they are comfortable wearing the hood. Get your birds measurements and have a custom hood created for the falcon. The hood should cover the eyes so that the falcon is calm while being transported. Being in a darkened state will put the falcon at rest and will allow you to take the bird home, and later take the bird on longer trips without the bird being agitated.
Build an appropriate mew
A mew is a home for a falcon or other large bird. It is best to build a mew outside so that the falcon house can have the appropriate amount of space. A mew that is in the shape of a circle or hexagon is common. The mew should have space for the falcon to fly around but not get out of the bars of the cage. Bars and spaces for the falcon to perch are important, so be sure to get the advice of an expert when building a mew for your particular falcon species.
Purchase proper gloves and coats
The claws of a falcon are made to grab prey, so they are often sharp and strong. Since you will need to start training with your falcon in order for the two of you to get your hunting technique down, you will need to wear proper clothing. A jacket with a tough exterior, such as leather will allow the falcon to grip the jacket on your shoulder but not accidentally scrape you or cause you pain. To keep your hands clean during hunting a pair of hunting gloves that are insulated and waterproof will allow you to handle your falcon.
